My Website Was Too Slow – And It Almost Killed My Business Before AI Did
I. The Problem I Didn't See Coming
Before AI deleted my website, something else was killing it.
Slow loading.
Not "a little slow." Painfully slow.
Google PageSpeed gave me 48/100 on mobile. My hosting provider said "it's fine." My developer said "it's normal for WordPress."
They were all wrong.
The truth? My 4.2 second load time was destroying my credibility. And I didn't even know it.
II. The Silent Killer (Linking to Silent Funnel)
In my previous article about The Silent Funnel, I talked about 93% of visitors leaving without asking a question.
But here's what I didn't say:
Most of them left BEFORE seeing anything.
Because my site took 4+ seconds to load.
Every 1 second delay = 7% drop in conversions. (Amazon data, 2025)
My 4.2 seconds? 22% of my leads gone. Just from speed. Not from my offer. Not from my copy. From waiting.
III. How AI Deleted My Slow Website (Linking to AI article)
Then AI deleted my site. (Yes, that really happened)
When I rebuilt, I made a decision:
Diagnostic layer first. Speed second. Everything else third.
But speed came before diagnostic.
Because a slow diagnostic layer = no one stays for the diagnosis.
IV. The Fix (45 Minutes)
Here's exactly what I changed – 45 minutes, $0 additional cost:
1. Image Compression (15 min) - Switched from PNG to WebP - Used Squoosh (free) - Reduced image size by 67%
2. Caching Plugin (10 min) - WP Rocket (paid) but LiteSpeed Cache (free) works - Enabled browser caching - 80% fewer server requests
3. Lazy Loading (5 min)
- Images load only when visible
- Native HTML loading="lazy"
- 2 second perceived speed improvement
4. Removed Unused Plugins (15 min) - 12 plugins → 7 plugins - Deactivated 5 that "might be useful someday" - Database cleaned
Result:
4.2 seconds
- Before
METRIC1.7 seconds
- After
METRIC48 → 89
- PageSpeed
METRICV. The Unexpected Benefit
- My site got faster. Then something strange happened.
- Bounce rate dropped 18%. Time on site increased 34%.
- People actually stayed long enough to read about The Silent Funnel.
- They stayed long enough to see the diagnostic layer.
- They stayed long enough to fill the
/contributeform. - Speed didn't just "fix loading." It unlocked everything else.
VI. 30 Days – 30 Problems (Series Launch)
This is #1 of "30 Problems in 30 Days."
Every day, I'm solving one website problem. Starting with the simplest. Moving to the most complex.
The rule: I only write about problems I've personally experienced – and solved.
The format: Problem → Failed attempts → What actually worked → Results
The goal: Build a diagnostic layer architecture WITH experts, not FOR them.
Today: Slow website. Tomorrow: Mobile buttons not working. Day 30: Redesign vs rebuild decision matrix.
VII. Contribute Your Problem
What's your #1 website frustration?
I'm building the next 29 articles based on real feedback from coaches, consultants, and freelancers.
